Gauging VS Choking

Gauging VS Choking

It may look scary when your baby learns to eat but stay calm even when it gets a bit scary! Your baby will "gag", which is when the gag reflex is triggered by getting food a little further back in the mouth. There is VERY little chance of them choking but it can look scary.

So, keep your fingers away from their mouth and let them deal with it. This is how they learn to handle food in their mouths and it's perfectly normal. However, it is easier said than done. That's why it's helpful and reassuring to read about the difference between gagging and choking and what to do in the unlikely event of an accident. We recommend watching videos on YouTube to see the difference.

Gagging is a perfectly normal part of learning to eat new foods but can be mistaken for choking. When a baby is gagging, they will be able to make noise, like coughing, while a choking baby may turn blue and will not be able to make noise or cough.
