Meal Planning Guidelines for Babies

Meal Planning Guidelines for Babies
12 September, 2023

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that newborns be breastfed for at least the first 12 months of life. At six months, it is safe to introduce solid foods, and by 6 to 8 months, 2-3 small meals daily are recommended, in addition to breastfeeding. From 9 to 11 months, adding two snacks between meals is encouraged, as breastmilk alone may not be sufficient and inadequate food intake can lead to iron and zinc deficiency, among other issues.

Food schedule:

6 months: Breastfeeding + small portions of solids

6-8 months: Breastfeeding + breakfast, lunch and dinner

9+ months: Breastfeeding + breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner

Water: Babies should only begin drinking sips of water once they start eating solid foods. Before then, babies get the hydration they need from formula or breastmilk.

During the first year, the quantity of food your baby consumes is not a crucial factor. Let your baby be in charge of the process and continue to breastfeed on demand when it’s possible.

Mealtime Tips:

Make mealtimes enjoyable and stress-free with these practical tips:

  • Maintain a relaxed atmosphere during feeding sessions.
  • Use appropriate utensils and serving dishes.
  • Respect your baby's cues and appetite.
  • Encourage self-feeding and exploration.
  • Create a routine and consistent mealtime schedule.
